Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the mesothelium, caused by even a single asbestos exposure. It has a latency period of up to 40 years. Proper diagnosis as early as possible is imperative.
Mesothelioma is a not just lung cancer. Rather, it is a rare, fatal cancer of the mesothelium. The mesothelium is the protective membrane of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), heart (pericardial mesothelioma), and abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). Most victims of mesothelioma die within the first year or so after diagnosis. Some are not diagnosed until autopsy. Such was the case with my own brother.
